THE MOY JO LEI OU COUNCIL (Conselho de Discípulos do Clã Moy Jo Lei Ou)

 Diferente de muitas pessoas, principalmente no Rio de Janeiro, gosto muito quando tenho a oportunidade de me vestir com terno e gravata. Nessas ocasiões, me vejo claramente mais alinhado do que com qualquer outra roupa. Além disso, um terno feito sob medida é uma das coisas mais bonitas que alguém pode usar em minha opinião.

Unlike many people, specially in Rio de Janeiro, I enjoy it a lot when I have the opportunity to wear a suit and tie. At such times, I see myself clearly as looking more fashionable than wearing any other piece of clothing. Besides, I think a custom-made suit is among the most stylish things a person can wear.

No último final de semana, lá estava eu passando meu terno sobre mesa do Mo Gun do Méier. Todos já tinham ido embora , o prédio estava vazio , pois já era tarde de Sábado. Bem baixinho, coloquei para tocar em meu notebook “Roll with the changes” da banda REO Speedwagon, que é a mesma que ouço agora. Isso acontece porque no último mês tenho lido a biografia de Steve Jobs , que infelizmente se aproxima do final, e me influenciei muito , passando a ouvir Bob Dylan e outros cantores e bandas das décadas de 60 e 70 para entrar no clima da primeira parte do livro.

Last weekend, I was ironing my suit on the table of the Mo Gun in Meier. Everyone left, the building was empty because it was Saturday afternoon. Very quietly, I played "Roll with the changes" by REO Speedwagon on my notebook, which is by the way the same song I'm listening to right now. This happens because I have been reading Steve Jobs' biography since last month, which has made me an impression and is, sadly enough, nearing to its end. Listening to Bob Dylan and other singers and bands from the 60s and 70s became a habit, to get in the mood of the first part of the book.

Dirigi o carro pelas desertas ruas do Méier em direção ao local onde encontraria meu irmão Kung Fu Rodrigo Moreira. Este, quando apareceu, também trajava um terno. Acontece, que estávamos rumando para uma reunião muito importante: A Fundação do Conselho de Discípulos do Clã Moy Jo Lei Ou.

I drove my car through the deserted streets of Meier towards the place I would meet my  Kung Fu brother Rodrigo Moreira, who was also wearing a suit. It turns out that we were heading for a very important meeting: The Foundation of the Board of Lifetime Members of Clan Moy Jo Lei Ou.

Quando se faz o “Baai Si” no Grande Clã Moy Yat Sang, recebe-se o que chamamos de “Nome Kung-Fu”. Um nome em chinês que começa com “Moy” , o nome de Família, e é seguido de um nome próprio dado pelo Si Fu da pessoa ou por alguém de sua escolha. E foi engraçado pensar como “Moy Jo Lei Ou” era apenas o nome dado a Si Fu em seu Baai Si em 1996. Com o tempo, passou a ser o nome de sua Família : “Família Moy Jo Lei Ou”. E agora, nomeia o Clã que ele lidera : “Clã Moy Jo Lei Ou”.  Essa mesma observação, ouvi de Si Fu em idos de 2007, quando bordei “Moy Yat” com a fonte “Old English” em um boné cinza e passei a usá-lo.

When one does the "Baai Si" in the Great Moy Yat Sang Clan, we receive what we call a "Kung Fu Name", a Chinese name that begins with "Moy", our family name, followed by a name given by Si Fu or someone of his choice. It was funny to think that "Moy Jo Lei Ou" was just Si Fu's given name in his Baai Si in 1996. As time went by, it also became the name of his family: "Family Moy Jo Lei Ou". And it names the clan he leads now: "Clan Moy Jo Lei Ou". I heard these same words from Si Fu in 2007 when I had a gray cap embroidered with "Moy Yat" in Old English font and began to wear it.

Quando os discípulos se reuniram a volta de Si Fu em cadeiras que formavam um semi-círculo. Me vi fazendo parte de algo realmente especial. Cada uma daquelas pessoas, chegou à Moy Yat Ving Tsun por motivos completamente diferentes, e assim também permaneceram. No entanto, todos naquele momento compartilhavam de seu compromisso discipular com Si Fu , e assim, se faziam presentes.
Si Fu falou algumas palavras de abertura. Dentre tudo que falou, frisou a importância de preservarmos nesse Conselho, alguns de seus valores pessoais: Proposição, Apoio e Adesão.
Na sequência, por aclamação, cinco nomes foram escolhidos para formar o Conselho permanente dentre os 25 discípulos que hoje compõem o Clã Moy Jo Lei Ou e os 16 que estavam presentes: Leonardo Reis, eu, Claudio Teixeira, André Almeida e também um quinto que não recebeu a notícia ainda..rs

When the disciples gathered around Si Fu on chairs in a semi-circle, I felt I was part of something really special. Each one of those people came to Moy Yat Ving Tsun for completely different reasons, and even so they remained. However, each and all shared their commitment to follow Si Fu in that occasion, and made it so.
Si Fu spoke a few opening words stressing the importance to preserve some of his personal values in this Council: Proposition, Support and Accession.
After that, five names were chosen by acclamation among the 25 disciples who are currently part of the Moy Jo Lei Ou Clan to form the Permanent Council (16 of them were present in the meeting): Leonardo Reis, myself, Claudio Teixeira, André Almeida and also a fifth one who hasn't heard of the news yet.. lol

O que vamos fazer daqui para frente é história. Que tipo de história, bom... Vai depender apenas de cada um de nós. De minha parte, realmente preciso dizer que a última tarde de Sábado me emocionou. Um pouco pela fantasia das imagens dos velhos encontros de Mestres eternizados nas páginas da “Inside Kung FU” que a cena da qual fazia parte me despertava. Um outro tanto pela inspiração que Si Fu proporciona ao alcançar essa fase em sua carreira, e por fim, a minha oportunidade de integrar esse grupo...

What we are going to do from now on will become history. What kind of history, well ... It will be up to each of us only. As for me, I really need to say that last Saturday afternoon touched me deeply. For one, it brought to my mind a bit of fantasy images of Old Masters' meetings immortalized in the pages of "Inside Kung Fu". The inspiration Si Fu brought reaching this stage in his career added to it. And last but not least, the chance to become part of this group...
