WHATS IS A CHUNG SI and Yat Doi Chung Si ?

In recent production "Ip Man 3"(2015), we see the character played by the great actor Max Zhang (photo) propose a challenge to the character played by Donnie Yen (Ip Man) for the title of "Chung Si of Ving Tsun" as we read in the plate at the background of the image above. However, translations of subtitles in Blu-Rays and even made by the fans did not include this term.
What would then be "Chung Si"?

Different from what we watch in every movie of the "Ip Man franchise" . One of the main Ip Man differentials was not his ability to fight and subdue opponents. But the high level of understanding of Kung Fu of many of his disciples.
These Ip Man's disciples became Si Fu and then received their first To Dai. And due, among other factors, the high-caliber of Ip Man in Martial Arts Circles (Mo Lam), he could not just be called "Si Fu" anymore and so it happens to be called "Chung Si".

"O Grande Mestre"...

Many people translate "Si Fu" separating the ideograms for "Master" or "Teacher" and "Father". But in fact, this can not be done. "Si Fu" is a term closed in itself, in which its ideograms lose their meaning when translated individually. That is, more is lost than gained.
"Chung Si" goes even further. Even translating each of ideograms, the dictionary cant to get a proper translation. But one of the possibilities I have heard from my Si Fu would be, "Chung Si as the person who is Si Fu of the Si Fu." Or, as translated ... "The Grand Master" ...

In the movie "Ip Man 3" (photo) the term Chung Si is written differently. At the plate, the character Max Zhang makes use of the following characters: (宗正). These characters have the same pronunciation that most commonly used for this expression: (宗師).

But when the masterpiece of Wong Kar-wai's "The Grandmasters" (photo) was released, which to me is still the best movie about Ip Man of all came to me, something caught my attention: Its Chinese title .Diferente of other movies about Ip Man, "the Grandmasters" in the original was not called "Ip Man" or anything like that. But it carried a term that had passed through my eyes often unnoticed, "Yat Doi Chung Si".

In the photo above, we see Senior Master Julio Camacho in one of the Ip Man museums in South China next to his bust.
On them we see a sign with the inscription: "Yat Doi Chung Si".
It is important to emphasize that Mestre Julio Camacho was the first Brazilian to step on the homeland of Ip Man and his museum. After him, many others were on site in the following years.

Notice now that one of the promotional posters of Wong Kar-wai's movie about Ip Man (photo), we see the same characters in white.
The term "Yat  Doi Chung Si" (一代 宗师) refers to something like "The greatest Si Fu of his generation" or "The main Chung Si of his time." In these terms, we can even consider that this expression can go beyond the "walls" of a unique style and end up comprising all martial arts from Lam.
So in "Ip Man 2"(2010) one of the characters at the end of the challenge against the British boxer puts Ip Man along Huo Yuan Jia (Founder of Jing Wu School or Ching Woo) and Wong Fei Hung (One of the Hung Ga ancestors). Both considered " Yat Doi Chung Si" (一代 宗师) of their generations as the heroes of China.

The photo above is from the last Sunday during the Third Ceremonial Act of the  Moy Fei Lap Family, located in the neighborhood of Freguesia, West of Rio. In this ceremony where the first three To Dai of Si Suk Felipe Soares entered his family, Si Gung was present and several other local leaders, including myself. On this picture we'll soon here on the Blog, but I used it to show that today, my Si Gung Leo Imamura can be considered a Chung Si (宗師).
